For the public

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture uses very fine sterile needles at selected points on the body. Our dedicated patient guide explains what happens at an appointment, possible benefits and limitations, safety, and how to choose a practitioner. Read the full guide →

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Typically: an intake discussion, an explanation of treatment and consent, treatment where appropriate, and aftercare advice.

Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a properly trained practitioner using clean needle technique and appropriate infection control, acupuncture is generally low risk.

Can I claim back treatment costs through health insurance?

Many Irish plans provide benefit for acupuncture under certain schemes. Requirements vary. See Insurance and Reimbursement and always confirm your own policy terms.

For practitioners

How do I apply for membership?

Start on Membership. You’ll choose the relevant category and complete the matching application form.

What insurance do I need?

You should hold appropriate professional indemnity insurance for your scope of practice.

What if my qualification is from outside Ireland?

See Registration Pathways. Overseas applicants may be asked for additional evidence so training can be mapped to entry criteria.

How are concerns about members handled?

Concerns are handled through the Fitness to Practise process. See Fitness to Practise.
